Metro Expo Line Extension Opens Today
The day when you can take the Metro Expo Line from Downtown Los Angeles to the Santa Monica beach has finally come, and for the next two days you can take a ride on the expo line for free! This significant event marks the first time in decades that users will be able to access the beach from Downtown Los Angeles.
Metro has planned celebrations at five of the seven new stations on Saturday. The celebrations, which will include music and food trucks, will be held at the Downtown Santa Monica, 17th St/SMC, 26th St/Bergamot, Expo/Bundy, and Palms stations, plus the already existing Culver City stations. Additionally, starting at noon today until close of service on Saturday, free rides are available on the entire Expo Line. For those of you who cannot make the celebrations and can’t wait to see what it’s like, below is Metro’s own time-lapse video of the Expo Line from Culver City to Santa Monica.
The opening of the extension will now allow riders to get from Downtown Santa Monica to Downtown Los Angeles in just 47-50 minutes. From Downtown Los Angeles, riders will then be able to access anywhere in Los Angeles that has a Metro line, including the San Fernando Valley, Azusa, El Monte, East Los Angeles, Long Beach, and the South Bay. What makes this even more exciting is that Metro is also currently working on an LAX/Crenshaw line, which will connect LAX to rest of the rail line. More information on the Crenshaw/LAX railway is available here, with the project’s expected completion date some time in 2019. A map of the current railway line is below.
